Atongo Zimba—The Kologo Master, Storyteller, and Musical Visionary

Atongo Zimba is more than just a musician—he is a cultural bridge, a storyteller, and a master of the kologo, the two-stringed lute native to the savannahs of West Africa. Born in Bolgatanga, Ghana, Atongo’s musical journey began under the guidance of his grandfather, who taught him to build and play the kologo. From a young age, he was immersed in the rhythms of his people, spending time in the countryside where cowherds sang and played flutes and percussion and mimicked the sounds of nature.

A Journey of Music & Exploration

Determined to take his music beyond traditional settings, Atongo set out to explore the world. His journey took him to Lagos, Nigeria, where he performed at Fela Kuti’s legendary Afrika Shrine, opening weekend shows for the Afrobeat pioneer. This period shaped his understanding of music as a tool for expression, resistance, and storytelling.

Returning to Ghana, Atongo became part of the thriving Accra music scene in the 1980s and 90s, working with legendary groups like Osibisa and the Pan African Orchestra. During this time, he refined his signature sound—an intoxicating blend of traditional Ghanaian rhythms, highlife, jazz, funk, and Afrobeat. His experimentation with the kologo went beyond its traditional role, using it for intricate melodies and a broader artistic vision.

Global Recognition & Chart-Topping Success

Atongo’s music caught international attention, leading him to tour extensively across Europe, Africa, and South America. He recorded his first international album, Allah Mongode, in Switzerland and collaborated with various musicians worldwide. His 2004 hit, “No Beer in Heaven, became a national anthem in Ghana, solidifying his place as a household name.

In 2005, he released Savannah Breeze, a groundbreaking Afro-Funk album featuring Dutch-based Ghanaian and Caribbean musicians. His next album, Barefoot in the Sand (2007), was a jazz-infused masterpiece that won “African CD of the Year” in Holland, earning him critical acclaim and cementing his place as one of Africa’s most innovative musicians.

Returning to the Roots & A New Chapter

After a decade of global touring, Atongo returned to Ghana, reconnecting with his roots and forming a new band in Accra. The pandemic provided an opportunity for deep reflection and creation, leading to his latest album, A to Z, which blends traditional wisdom with contemporary soundscapes.

A true musical storyteller, Atongo sings in Fra Fra, Hausa, Ga, English, and Twi, crafting songs that touch on themes of power, respect, identity, love, and African development. Whether performing in intimate village gatherings or on grand international stages, his music carries the spirit of Ghana to the world.
